    Design, analysis, and testing of high frequency passively damped struts

    Objectives of the research are: (1) to develop design requirements for damped struts to stabilize control system in the high frequency cross-over and spill-over range; (2) to design, fabricate and test viscously damped strut and viscoelastically damped strut; (3) to verify accuracy of design and analysis methodology of damped struts; and (4) to design and build test apparatus, and develop data reduction algorithm to measure strut complex stiffness. In order to meet the stringent performance requirements of the SPICE experiment, the active control system is used to suppress the dynamic responses of the low order structural modes. However, the control system also inadvertently drives some of the higher order modes unstable in the cross-over and spill-over frequency range. Passive damping is a reliable and effective way to provide damping to stabilize the control system. It also improves the robustness of the control system. Damping is designed into the SPICE testbed as an integral part of the control-structure technology

    From tradition to modern: attitudes and applications of guanxi in Chinese entrepreneurship.

    Purpose - This article aims to examine one aspect of Chinese culture, guanxi. Guanxi, "special relationships" has long been employed to facilitate business in China. The authors ask whether this is likely to continue in the rapidly changing environment. China's long history of insularity has created a culture and business environment considered to be uniquely based on Confucian values. Yet in the last couple of decades China has opened its doors to globalisation. These forces, in conjunction with what many see as Confucian dynamism of Chinese entrepreneurship, have generated economic growth levels in excess of 11 per cent per annum. This blending of the old and the new raises questions about how practices may be changing. Design/methodology/approach - The authors employed a survey of two groups; middle managers in Hong Kong and young middle class in mainland China. These groups represent the modern, Hong Kong as westernised; the old, but with new perspectives, the affluent middle classes of present day China. Open-ended questions about perceptions of understanding and use of guanxi were asked. Findings - The research finds many contrasts between the respondent groups. The Hong Kong respondents did not really understand guanxi, but still thought it important in China. The mainland group both understood and used guanxi, but similarly to the Hong Kong group, did not like it or enjoy its use. Both groups saw a diminishing application of guanxi as China's regulatory and market environment improves. Originality/value - The paper establishes that guanxi persists and may remain essential in China. However guanxi will work in conjunction with markets and regulations, rather than as a replacement

    A preliminary study of a quantitative analysis method for high speed laryngoscopic images

    High speed laryngoscopic study provides new information on the vocal fold vibratory patterns which has not been made possible before. Qualitative analysis of high speed laryngoscopic images is commonly reported in the literature. However, quantitative studies are necessary to provide objective measures for research and clinical purposes. This study reports the development of the High Speed Video Processing Program in analysing high-speed laryngoscopic video images obtained from 15 non-dysphonic speakers. Nine glottal ratio indices that represented the full opened glottal area, glottal width and glottal length were computed using the processing program. Data from two dysphonic participants were included to illustrate the manifestation of these glottal measures in dysphonic voices. Some of these glottal ratio index measures showed high variability across participants. However, significant differences were found in a number of index measures among the creaky, modal and falsetto registers in the non-dysphonic participants. In addition, the glottal area ratio index was found to be specifically sensitive in detecting dysphonia in high speed glottal images.     Housing prices and multiple employment nodes: is the relationship nonmonotonic?

    Standard urban economic theory predicts that house prices will decline with distance from the central business district. Empirical results have been equivocal, however. Disjoints between theory and empirics may be due to a nonmonotonic relationship between house prices and access to employment arising from the negative externalities associated with proximity to multiple centres of employment. Based on data from Glasgow (Scotland), we use gravity-based measures of accessibility estimated using a flexible functional form that allows for nonmonotonicity. The results are thoroughly tested using recent advances in spatial econometrics. We find compelling evidence of a nonmonotonic effect in the accessibility measure and discuss the implications for planning and housing policy

    A note on the realignment criterion

    For a quantum state in a bipartite system represented as a density matrix, researchers used the realignment matrix and functions on its singular values to study the separability of the quantum state. We obtain bounds for elementary symmetric functions of singular values of realignment matrices. This answers some open problems proposed by Lupo, Aniello, and Scardicchio. As a consequence, we show that the proposed scheme by these authors for testing separability would not work if the two subsystems of the bipartite system have the same dimension.Comment: 11 pages, to appear in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretica

    A New Hybrid Descent Method with Application to the Optimal Design of Finite Precision FIR Filters

    In this paper, the problem of the optimal design of discrete coefficient FIR filters is considered. A novelhybrid descent method, consisting of a simulated annealing algorithm and a gradient-based method, isproposed. The simulated annealing algorithm operates on the space of orthogonal matrices and is used tolocate descent points for previously converged local minima. The gradient-based method is derived fromconverting the discrete problem to a continuous problem via the Stiefel manifold, where convergence canbe guaranteed. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid descent method, several numericalexamples show that better discrete filter designs can be sought via this hybrid descent method

    Speech Enhancement Strategy for Speech Recognition Microcontroller under Noisy Environments

    Industrial automation with speech control functions is generally installed with a speech recognition sensor which is used as an interface for users to articulate speech commands. However, recognition errors are likely to be produced when background noise surrounds the command spoken into the speech recognition microcontrollers. In this paper, a speech enhancement strategy is proposed to develop noise suppression filters in order to improve the accuracy of speech recognition microcontrollers. It uses a universal estimator, namely a neural network, to enhance the recognition accuracy of microcontrollers by integrating better signals processed by various noise suppression filters, where a global optimization algorithm, namely an intelligent particle swarm optimization, is used to optimize the inbuilt parameters of the neural network in order to maximize accuracy of speech recognition microcontrollers working within noisy environments. The proposed approach overcomes the limitations of the existing noise suppression filters intended to improve recognition accuracy. The performance of the proposed approach was evaluated by a speech recognition microcontroller, which is used in electronic products with speech control functions. Results show that the accuracy of the speech recognition microcontroller can be improved using the proposed approach, when working under low signal to noise ratio conditions in the industrial environments of automobile engines and factory machines
